Carnauba wax has been a staple in auto detailing for decades. Known for its rich shine and deep warmth, it’s often associated with high-end, hand-waxed finishes. But at Luxury Car Detailing, we’ve moved away from using traditional carnauba wax—and for good reason.
While it still has its place in the industry, modern detailing technology has far surpassed carnauba in durability, longevity, and protection, especially for clients in New England dealing with harsh weather conditions.
Here’s why we’ve stopped using carnauba—and what we use instead to protect your investment.
Carnauba wax typically lasts 3 to 6 weeks, maybe up to 8 under perfect conditions. In New England, with salt, sand, pollen, and rain, you’re lucky to get a full month of protection before it breaks down.
Carnauba breaks down quickly under exposure to:
That makes it less ideal for real-world, daily-driving conditions.
Carnauba can soften and melt under high heat, which can cause streaking or hazing, especially on dark-colored vehicles left in the sun. This makes it unreliable during the summer months or on black paint jobs.
It looks great for a weekend show, but if you want protection that lasts more than a few weeks, you’ll need to reapply it constantly. That’s not practical for most people.
We often use polymer-based synthetic sealants instead of carnauba wax for our wash and wax packages. These offer:
Sealants give you a similar aesthetic boost without the fragility of wax—and they’re better suited to cars that are daily driven or parked outdoors.
For clients looking for long-term protection, ceramic coatings are in a completely different class.
While more expensive up front, ceramic coatings save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.
Carnauba can still be a good choice for:
But for 99% of the daily drivers we work on here in Rhode Island, sealants or ceramics provide far more value and durability.
At Luxury Car Detailing, we’re always evolving with the industry—and that means using products that perform best in real-world conditions. Carnauba wax has a long history, but it’s no longer the best option for long-lasting protection or daily use.
Instead, we focus on delivering shine and longevity, with professional-grade sealants and ceramic coatings that can handle New England roads all year long.
